Jerry West was born in Chelyan, West Virginia in 1938, the fifth of six children to Cecil and Howard West. West’s older brother David was killed in the Korean War, and the loss caused him to become withdrawn and shy as a child. From 1952 to 1956, he was a student at East Bank High School and a basketball player for coach Duke Shaver. In a short amount of time, West was named the team’s captain and was given the starting small forward position.
