The streaming giant announced on Thursday that Rock will give the first performance at the company’s first-ever live, global streaming event. The only information that has been released about the comedy special is that it will be accessible to watch beginning in early 2023.
The vice president of stand-up and comedy formats at Netflix, Robbie Praw, has said, “Chris Rock is one of the most iconic and significant comedic voices of our generation.”
It’ll be Rock’s second comedy special for the service. The debut album by Chris Rock, titled Tamborine, came out in February of 2018.
We are overjoyed that Netflix is able to host a global event where everyone can watch a live Chris Rock comedy show. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we appreciate Chris’s commitment to carrying it forward.
The event will air in early 2023, about a year after the infamous Oscars incident in which the comedian was slapped by Will Smith.
Netflix is no stranger to live events, but this will be their first time streaming a comedy show.
As part of the springtime “Netflix is a Joke: The Festival,” more than 330 comedians gave 295 performances across 35 venues in Los Angeles, including the first-ever stand-up show at Dodger Stadium. A total of around 260,000 people attended the performance.
On the Ego Death World Tour, which Rock and his frequent touring partner Dave Chappelle are currently performing, Rock will be visiting several California venues in the month of December.
