On March 23, 1944, Ric was born in Baltimore, Maryland. When he was ready for high school, he enrolled at Maple Heights High in Cleveland and eventually graduated in 1963. He enrolled at Bowling Green State University but later left to focus on his music career instead. It was at this time that he met Benjamin Orr, who would go on to become a close friend and musical collaborator for the rest of his life. After choosing to start a band in 1968 and performing at various institutions, most notably Ohio State University, they eventually landed on the moniker ID Nirvana.

Ric and Suzanne split up in 1988 and ultimately got divorced. Ric married Paulina in 1989, and the two have since had two children. A year before their wedding, Paulina signed an endorsement agreement with Estée Lauder that would earn her $6 million annually through 1995. Adjusted for inflation, her $42 million in pretax profits from that one deal are worth almost $80 million now. Their “peaceful separation” from May 2018 did not affect their legal status as husband and wife, which remained unchanged until Ric’s death in 2019.
